Does your belief system dictate your perception of your reality?

Your belief system or core values is like an operating system on your computer.  It, along with how you think and process information, is the foundation of your personality in my opinion.  Like an operating system, it requires regular updates.  Many of us are still running an operating system that is many decades old and hence, will have some maladaptations!

For example, if one has a core value that life should be fair, then you may expect that person to strongly react to life's everyday unfairness.  Let's face it, life is NOT fair.  How can it be fair if people have different status, different power, and different position in our society.  The reality is that, life is not fair.

However, if one can change one's core value to, it would be nice if life is fair, then one would react with less intensity to life's unfairness.  One may even embrace it to some extent and still try to make life fair.

Some will have a belief that I am not good enough.  Changing this to I am enough.  I am good enough because I am learning and growing as a person, can be life changing.

The good news is, that we can learn to accept our core values, defuse from it, or change them in order to change our reactions into something more helpful.  We can achieve this through mindfulness, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance Behavioural Therapy).
